In the increasingly digital age, where we are told to keep everything in one place, I’m going to advise the opposite - keep a journal.
Thanks to a friend and former colleague of mine, I recently restarted this good habit from my early career when I worked a 2-on & 2-off schedule. Back then it was an essential professional skills that allowed me to pick up my job after a 2 week break.
Revisiting this habit has transformed my productivity and allows me to reflect on everything I’ve achieved at the end of each day. Aside from being an extremely satisfying and uplifting few minutes, it prepares me mentally for the next day’s efforts. When I open it each morning, my mind is right back on track, avoiding the slower start to the day that I might have. I’m not sure if it’s that I’m just more productive, or if I’m more conscious of my productivity because of the journal, but I’m finding there are no more 12 AM work nights. I feel that I’ve reached a good point at 6-7 PM and I feel satisfied as I shut my computer down. For me, that is a huge achievement! Something about writing it on paper makes all the difference. Somehow it seems to sink into my brain further and programs me for success tomorrow - whatever it is, there’s definitely something very cathartic about the activity.
I must thank Kevin Nguyen for getting me back to basics, and give a shout out to his Legion & Company products. The journal is of beautiful quality, is so nice to write in, and it is helping me keep this habit up!
